Gents,
We (Dodo, Godfrey and I ) had a dispute pertaining the provisional ball
ruling in PCC last sunday.
I thought I should share this link with all of you pertaining the
provisional ball ruling.
http://www.barryrhodes.com/2010/04/when-you-may-not-play-provisional-ball.html
*Background*: I hooked the ball (hole 14) toward the lateral water hazard
but did not see it going into the hazard and *there was a possibility that
the ball may have gone over the hazard* (hole 14 Par 3) and most likely be
a lost ball if not found. My playing partners did not agree I should play
the provisional ball even though they did not see the ball going into the
hazard but i insisted because I know the rules (thought I knew all until
.........)
where i went wrong was when I did not find the original ball in the hazard
(and also on the other side of hole 15) and then assumed that it would not
have crossed the hazard (given the closer view i had of the hazard as
opposed to the view I had from the tee box) and dropped the ball under Rule
26-1a. Should I have found my ball in the hazard, I could have still played
it in the hazard or take a penalty shot and abandone the provisional ball
under rule 27-2c. This is only applicable if there was a possibility of the
original ball to be lost.
The trick here is that, the original ball must have the likelihood of being
lost *outside* the hazard, if NOT then you cannot play a provisional ball.
If you do play a provisional ball then you cannot continue playing the
original ball even if you find it (Look at the Greg Norman scenario of
playing a provisional ball (thinking the original was in the water) then
found his orginal ball in the bunker and he abandoned the provisional ball
and that cost him 4 strokes penalty.
I hope you enjoy this as I did.
Dodo, Godfrey: You were wrong from the provisional ball ruling but very
much correct from the ball dropping part (where i applied Rule 26-1a).
The rules of golf make this game FUN and we should never be emotional when
challenged. KG got sick and tired of the argument, it was becoming too
technical for his liking, lol.
My apologies Mr Chairman for sperming your forum, thought this would be of
interest to all your subordinates.
regards
MQ.

It's been a good start to the season for SA golfers. Garth Mullroy started
off by winning the co-sanctioned Sunshine/Euro Dunhill open at Leopard
creek. This was followed by Brandon Grace's back to back victories which
included the coveted Joburg open(Amazing Grace) indeed . Last week the
smallest golfer on tour, Bloemfontein based JBE Kruger won his first
European title in New Delhi. Yesterday at Marana, Arizona, USA, Ernie Els
crashed top seed Luke Donald out of the WGC- Accenture Match play
Championship beating him by 5&4 causing one of the biggest upsets in golfing
history. Not only is Donald the top seed but he was until he met the Big
Easy the defending champion. Rory Mclroy survived a late charge from George
Coetzee. Otherwise South Africa is well represented amongst the 32 players
still vying for the championship in Arizona.
Indeed South Africa has produced the following major winners; Gary Player, 9
majors, Bobby Lock (4), Ernie Els (3), Retief Goosen (2), and Trevor
Immelman, Louis Oosthuizen and Char Schwartzel (All 1 each). The fact of
the matter is that transformation is still a challenge. Since Vincent
Tshabalala won the French open donkeys years ago and James Kamte won on the
Sunshine tour, we have had no black player making serious inroads
internationally. In fact to put it bluntly, since James Kamte earned his
European tour card in 2007, he became the first black player in three
decades to obtain the card. There has been several efforts from various
quarters to support golf development but we still wait for the champion
golfer. We are still looking for a home grown black player who will emulate
the likes of Gary Player, Dale Hayes, Ernie Els, Goosen, Oosthuizen,
Scwhartzel and also join your Brandon Grace and JBE Kruger of this era in
winning majors and European tour titles. Once we get one such a player
methinks many will follow. It takes guts, determination, discipline, finance
and support to make it to into the top 50 in the world and stay there
consistently. The "born free generation" aka the "Mandela babies" have come
off age. Will Africa's Tiger Woods raise your hand, this is your time, the
world is your oyster.
